The car for idiots

“No one is going to pay a $15,000 premium for a car that competes with a Toyota Corolla”..”So there are not enough idiots who will buy it.” -Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen commenting on the Chevrolet Volt.

He’s right. I love electric cars as much as anyone else but the simple fact is that the Volt is a niche vehicle and a lot of feel good for the “shiny happy people”, to quote Peter De Lorenzo. I maintain that we could make a greater environmental impact by better refining the internal combustion engine in the near term.

Sure someday we may drive electric cars, or hydrogen powered cars, or cars with donkeys and mule attached to the front of them. Who knows, who cares. It’s way too early to take a stand on one particular technology and herald it as the panacea salvation from fossil fuel.
